TORONTO, ON -- In 1981 Dr. Hadi Mahabadi came to Canada with his wife, infant son and no financial support. Today, he is a renowned scientist that holds more than 70 U.S. patents and leads a global research team for one of the world's most recognized brands.

Dr. Mahabadi was named one of the 'Top 25 Canadian Immigrants of the Year' at Canadian Immigrant magazine's award ceremony yesterday. The publication's second annual awards program celebrates the stories and achievements of outstanding Canadian immigrants from coast to coast to coast. Dr. Mahabadi was named one of the 'Top 75 Immigrants' compiled by the magazine in April of this year, and was voted to the Top 25 this month.

The national award allows Canadians to vote directly for the 'Top 75' individuals who have made a difference since their arrival in Canada. More than 20,000 votes from across the country were cast this year.

"There are many individuals that have contributed to my professional success," says Dr. Mahabadi. "I can't speak for everyone who has adopted Canada as their home, but it's been a land of opportunity for me. Words cannot describe how proud I am to contribute to the betterment of this wonderful land. My culture and educational background were not only welcomed, but encouraged at every level of my career. Xerox is a company that embodies Canada's inclusive culture, and its diverse approach to innovation continually enriches the company's employee base, and bottom line."

Prior to joining Xerox, Dr. Mahabadi was Chair of Chemical Engineering at the Tehran University of Technology. He received his PhD in the field of polymer engineering from the University of Waterloo in 1976.

Dr. Mahabadi is the recently elected Chair of the Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) and a fellow of several scientific societies including the Canadian Academy of Engineering. He sits on several organizations' boards, and was ranked first in PrintAction magazine's "50 most Influential Canadians in Graphic Communications" in both 2008 and 2009.
